Cal’s encounter with the robotic lion there in the cozy and darkened confines of L.A.’s own Dodger Stadium has him galloping away atop a mechanical moose and barely escaping by the hairs on his chinnny-chin-chin. Unfortunately for real Cowboy Cal Carpenter, his high speed escapade is marred by him not seeing the top metal crossbar of a nearby park swingset. Ouch. And now, Dean, still stuck with Daisy and Lee somewhere miles away, is worried about a father he doesn’t know is unconscious.

The robots are definitely spreading out across the city of Los Angeles with some moving north toward the valley, some moving west toward the ocean and others still completely unaccounted for. One thing is for sure, the location of one of Transistor Rodeo’s king of the beasts. After being “rescued” from the police by Black Bart’s robot horse, Cal is carried away through the streets of Chinatown and up into Dodger Stadium where Cal ends up laid out in centerfield in very close, or perhaps “scary” close, proximity to a robotic lion.

In December, Adam Curry asked me to write an endorsement for Ron Paul, the Republican dark horse candidate for President whose campaign he had become involved with. Adam gave me an idea what he wanted, a rallying cry for his audience, and anyone listening to support Ron Paul’s White House bid because of the foundations of the Ron Paul campaign.
Now, in all interests of disclosure, I am not a Ron Paul supporter myself but given that Adam is my boss and I am supportive of his passion to help the Ron Paul campaign, I gladly accepted the challenge when he called to ask me to write up something for him.
I also only had an hour to write it.
So how does one put together a rallying cry for a cause they don’t really believe in? In such short time?
By taking the facts at hand and making sure the language centered around those facts evokes a sense of passion, inspiration, urgency and above all open honesty.
I’m not saying the facts in any speech have to be true, honest facts. I mean this is politics we’re talking about. I’m saying the presentation of those facts has to present the speaker as someone who is being honest with their opinion. There’s a huge difference.
But in this case, I felt the facts were very straightforward. Here was a centrist candidate who was really more moderate than his fellow Republicans. I wanted the words to reflect that Ron Paul was above all an American with American values. I wanted to do what any good speechwriter would want to do: paint the picture of a man with a plan to address our current concerns while at the same time flying the flag of patriotism. To top it off, I wanted to make sure and tailor make the piece to fit the speaker’s (In this case Adam Curry’s) “voice” as organically as possible.
And I had an hour to do it.
I know Adam could have penned a great endorsement himself if he had the time but he’s an extremely, extremely busy man and now the responsibility to put the right words to my boss’ voice for all the world to see was on my shoulders. So I sat and thought and thought and with twenty minutes to go, cranked out a draft. I sent it off awaiting notes. To my surprise, that weekend, Adam shot it verbatim.
Though you’ve possibly already seen it, I present it to you again because it’s a piece of writing I’m very proud of.
